We often celebrate the marvels of engineering—AI that changes industries, missions to Mars, and medical advancements curing diseases once thought unbeatable. But during a recent chat at Voice of Reason AI, our team found ourselves reflecting on past experiences and realizing that many of the companies we worked for struggled with what should have been simple, low-tech development. This led us to some deep reflections on the human side of engineering and why these struggles occur.
At Voice of Reason AI, we’re aiming to build something meaningful—something that genuinely helps people. As we grow, we want to stay mindful of where we might have failed in the past and lay a strong foundation now to address challenges that may arise years down the line. We’re focused on creating a culture so deeply rooted in our mission that the vision will continue long after the initial spark—lasting longer and staying stronger than it might otherwise.
1. Where’s the Passion?
I was once asked, “If you could not fail, what would you do?” It’s a question that hits deep, and I’ve asked it to others countless times. Guess what? Not a single person has ever said they’d be doing what they’re currently doing. Why is that? If people don’t have passion for their work, it shows.
I’ve had jobs where I would’ve gladly paid the company just to let me be there because I loved the work so much. But those moments are rare. For most people, the passion fades fast, and without that drive, we’re just going through the motions.
“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” — Oprah Winfrey
2. The Loss of Purpose
Many companies seem to lose their sense of purpose as they grow. I once worked with a company that was literally developing devices to help cure cancer—a mission that couldn’t be more important. But as it expanded, it became bogged down in bureaucracy and internal politics. Avoiding risk became the new mission, not saving lives.
“When you have a dream, you’ve got to grab it and never let go.” — Carol Burnett
At Voice of Reason AI, we believe having a real mission that matters is everything. Without it, progress slows, and innovation fades. If your goal isn’t clear and urgent, it’s easy to fall into a cycle of playing it safe instead of pushing forward.
3. Losing the Drive for Technology Mastery
Another issue? Companies lose their enthusiasm for their own tech. Hiring people who genuinely want to understand the technology and how customers will use it is rare these days. This leads to a disconnect where “I’m not a technical person” becomes a way to opt out and a badge of pride. The technical people end up one level down, and it becomes harder to build great products.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” — Steve Jobs
If companies want to succeed, leaders and teams need to be invested in their own tech. Understanding the product and the customer experience should be non-negotiable.
4. Excellence for Excellence’s Sake
Look, not every job is going to be as impactful as curing cancer or sending a spaceship to Mars, but doing even mundane work with excellence can be fulfilling. Finding pride in the craft—even if it’s routine—can make it exciting. But what we see too often is people, whether leaders or team members, focusing more on how to get away from the work rather than doing it well. And let’s face it—remote work makes that even easier.
“Whatever you are, be a good one.” — Abraham Lincoln
I remember someone once saying, “You can always find a completely valid reason for not being around your team, but don’t do it.” It’s a powerful reminder that being present and engaged matters. True passion and excellence come from showing up and being invested, not finding excuses to step back.
5. Reconnecting with Purpose
At Voice of Reason AI, we believe in bringing back that real sense of purpose, valuing true technical mastery, and embracing excellence in everything we do. We challenge other companies and individuals to ask themselves: Are you genuinely excited about what you do? Are you striving for excellence, even in the little things? Are you finding ways to fully engage with your team and your mission?
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” — Albert Schweitzer
